Chapter Eight
When woke, I was alone. My shoulder still hurt, but someone changed the bandages recently. Jenny was doing great job as a medic. Many of the girls came back from missions wounded. When Danielle found me, they needed help with basic skills. Healthcare was the first thing we improved. Jenny had stepped forward when I asked for volunteers. She and Lisa were the ones I trained in first aid and basic wound care. From there, they trained other assistants.
It was a strange feeling that the things I had learned in books was able to transfer to real life. If I had stayed in New Foundland, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see the result of what I had learned. We planted a garden to grow fresh vegetables. After a couple of attempts, we finally had both hot and cold running water in the tunnel. The girls were so eager to learn. It was strange being the teacher, especially when most were closer to my mother’s age than mine. It felt incredible whenever they learned something new. I could see the light in their eyes begin to return. They paid me back by building me a little room where I can be alone and ran water into it. Oddly enough though, I would have done it for nothing. They gave me a purpose. This new world was completely different from home, and if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be alive. I know I’m not going back to New Foundland. There’s no delusion there. This tunnel is my home, and these women are my family.
“Good morning, Boss.” Jenny stepped through the open door. “How are you feeling?”
“Sore and hungry.” I had to struggle to sit up on the bed. They’d remembered to put down a plastic cover beneath my shoulder so the blood wouldn’t soak into the mattress.
Danielle stepped through the door behind her. “So, you seem to be doing better.”
“How do you do that?” I asked.
“What?”
“Always know when I wake up.”
“I have my spies.” She smiled.
I knew it. “Yeah I’m doing okay. What have you been doing?”
“Not sleeping.” She smiled.
“Funny.” Even I had to smile at that. “What about our guests?”
“Oh. They’re staying, and they may have some ideas on restocking our supplies.”
“How?”
“The warehouses in Centralia. Veronica was a Rentee, owned by the manager of the food storage unit.”
God I hate that term; Rentee. “Did she say anything about our trespassers?”
“The men had been there to do some upgrades to the security systems.”
“How does she know that?”
“Her owner told her.”
It’s funny what people will say in front of people that they don’t see as a threat. “Did the girls find anything on the bodies before they buried them?”
“Why?”
“Dani, please. My question is important.” I didn’t think I could convince her to dig up the bodies.
"Don’t worry. You trained your team well. They went through every pocket, box and case for any pieces of paper. Jenny, will you go ask Lori to bring in the paperwork?” Jenny nodded before leaving.
